RENT is a ground-breaking rock musical that follows a year in the lives of a group of artists, outsiders and misfits struggling to survive in New York’s East Village under the shadow of poverty, addiction and the HIV/AIDS crisis.

Inspired by Puccini’s La Bohème, RENT tells the story of filmmaker Mark and musician Roger as they navigate love, loss, creativity and community. Alongside them are: Collins, a philosophy professor; Angel, a fiercely joyful drag performer; Mimi, a dancer battling addiction; Maureen, a bold performance artist; Joanne, a driven lawyer; and Benny, a former friend turned landlord. Together, they strive to live fully and truthfully, even when tomorrow is not guaranteed.

With its electrifying score, raw emotional power, and themes of chosen family, resistance and hope, RENT remains as urgent and resonant today as when it first premiered in 1996.

Our production ran for six sold out performances at the Bridewell theatre in November 2025.
